From "Romeo & Juliet" to our days: forced marriage.

Nowadays, the phenomenon of forced marriages has gradually spread, not just in the Islamic world, but it seems to have caught on in our continent. The latter could be justified by some ingrained habits within the Muslim mindset. These, therefore, would result from the coincidence between the policy sphere concerning aspects of daily life and the religious sphere and, especially, the persistent consideration of the Prophet in Islamic society. This, in fact, considered "the best" and "model for believers" is not just used as a pretext for the claim of forced marriages, but it’s also the reason of its rapid spread across multiple countries. Therefore, this phenomenon, which constitutes the greatest obstacle to integration in the Western world, is hard to solve because it’s gradually taking root in the common mentality and its origin can be found in Muslim customs, which are justified by religion. Nowadays, moreover, the most credible pretext that allows the presence of forced marriages is to say that the body of a minor girl can have sex and, consequently, she can assume the responsibilities arising from the marriage. In fact, according to a passage from the Quran, “if the individual is unable to decide the marriage and to conclude the contract for his immature age or mental disability, the marriage’s tutor will do it for him, the closest relative that exercises the power of marriage duress.” In the European historical context, this important phenomenon has been exploited to make deals and alliances between different ethnic peoples, whose presence can be already documented in the Roman Empire and later in the medieval world. However, failing this in modern times, the practice has been gradually falling into disuse. Although it’s difficult to remedy this problem, the best solution we could track down is to consider the point of view of some Muslim theologians, who try to adopt an historical contextualization of the Quran. In fact, despite we tend to underestimate this issue that’s looked at in such simple terms as a phenomenon belonging to other cultures, the latter is so much closer to us than we can think: this doesn’t happen only in the Oriental world, but it’s also catching on in Europe. Furthermore, in some countries of our continent, there’s the barbaric custom of selling women who have few years as a token to pay off debts, make deals, put an end to an issue. Woman is objectified and she is considered as a commodity used “to pay” or to right somebody else’s wrongs. This is certainly sign of radical changes that western society is undergoing, seeing as it often happens it isn’t just a young immigrated women’s matter to get married against their will, but also many Italian girls are involved in shotgun marriages or in supposed male honour’s crimes.
